The Tesla Roadster - An Amazing Electric Car

When I think of electric cars I get a mental image of something, small, light weight, short range, and boring. Well the Tesla roadster is not boring. It is a true sports car which just happens to be driven by electric motors and not an internal combustion engine.

Some of the details are really interesting. An electric motor provides maximum torque at zero rpm. This amount burned up the clutches on the first model. How do you make a transmission that will also rev to 13,000? Turns out the answer was designing a one speed transmission.

Other changes have resulted in 280 lb-ft (my 1984 Ferrari has only 198). A zero to 60 mph time of 3.9 seconds and quarter-mile at 12.7 seconds at 105 mph. The only figure that is not in the supercar range is a top speed of 125 mph.

As of last month Tesla had delivered 100 roadsters to California customers. I'm really looking forward to seeing one of these beauties in person.
