Yesterday I discussed the major reason for purchasing these devices - more power. There are two other reasons that you might want one. More sound. The factory air box is restrictive because they want to produce quiet cars. With less restrictions you get an increase in the sound level and pitch. Lots of folks like this. Another reason is the cold air intake or short ram intakes come in different colors, from polished to red and blue etc. They will dress up the engine compartment.
On the other hand, everything is not an advantage. If you are using a cold air intake there is some possibility that you could draw in water along with the additional air when you go through a large puddle. This can cause hydro-lock and harm your engine. Typical rain fall is not a problem. There are two common solutions to this potential problem. One is a cover for the air filter which allows air flow but stops water from entering. The other is a dual valve system, where if the main air path becomes blocked, a bypass is used to continue air into the engine.
The better brands will offer this type of protection, while the cheap stuff does not.
