Jaguar XFR - 225 Miles Per Hour!

My wife has a Jaguar XJ8, and it replaced a XJS a couple of years ago. We are both members of the San Diego Jaguar club, and I'm a former officer. So I keep track of what is happening in the Jaguar world.

This year Jaguar offered a model called the XF, which replaced the S series. The XF is the combination of a sports car and luxury sedan (according to Jaguar literature) four doors and four passengers. It started out with a 300 hp basic engine and now has an optional 510 hp supercharged one called the XFR.

The April 09 issue of Road and Track, which I just received today has an interesting article on the XFR. Seems that a slightly modied sedan has set a new top speed record for Jaguars - 225 mph at Bonneville. This beat the former record of 217 held by the Jaguar XJ220 supercar in 1992.

According to Jaguar the standard XFR had minor areodynamic (rear spoiler plus), and safety modifications to comply with Bonneville requirements. The stock 510 hp engine had some tweaking in a remapped ECU, modified exaust and air intake systems and revised supercharger settings. What really struck me was that it was using the car's standard 6-speed automatic transmission, with no change in gear ratios.

Now this is a record that I love. Appears I will have to keep a closer eye on the brand.

Honda's FCX Clarity

A while back I discussed some aspects of the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell powered experimental car. I was impressed with many of the ideas inherent in the car. Recently I read an article that gives a different picture of the car's future.

The bottom line on this article is that the fuel cell approach is not going to work for a couple of reasons. The most critical one the author believes is that fuel-cell technology has been eclipsed by vastly cheaper, here-now advances in batteries and plug-in electric vehicles. He does a comparison of the energy return for the FCX and a the all-electric Tesla Roadster with a battery. His conclusions are that the Tesla's per-mile costs in electricity are roughly one-quarter of what they are in the FCX Clarity.

That's a giant gap to overcome. He also wonders why a very smart company like Honda is putting so much money in a technology that will not be competitive? He believes that there are two reasons. "First, major manufacturers must begin complying with California's mandate that each sell 7,500 zero-emission vehicles between 2012 and 2014. Fuel-cell vehicles get extra points in meeting this quota."

The second reason is that most of the new technology used in the FCX can be transferred to future electric vehicles, even if they won't be using a fuel cell.

What do you think Honda's reasons are for designing a car that currently must cost around 2 million dollars each?

Here is the article:

SL 65 AMG Black Series Continued

Yesterday I mentioned a couple of things about the new Benz Black Series. First this is a beast of a car, and it is limited to 175 coming to this country. So aside from a car show, I doubt I will ever see a real one. The specs are impressive. Just take a look at the wheels, for instance. 19 x 9.5 at the front and 20 x 11.5 at the rear. Not sure if this is a car or a truck. Tires are 265/35 ZR-19 front and 325/30 ZR-20 at the rear. Much larger and you could use them on an air plane.

One surprise, mentioned in the Road and Track article was the brakes. For $300,000 plus you would except carbon-ceramic, however you still get iron ones. They are large and do the job, but not exotic like those found on other cars in this price range.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic is used in the car in the front fenders, hood and front fascia and trunk lid. All of these make the Black Series weigh less than the standard SL 65 AMG. But less is still 4385 tested weight. This means the car is not quite as nimble as a Ferrari 599 in getting off the line, and around a track.

But if you are looking for unique looks, gobs of power, and interior luxury, this could be the one.

Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series

I was taking my two dogs (yellow labs) on a walk the other day and I went down a street we had not been to before. Passed a house with three cars sitting in the driveway. One was a Mercedes-Benz SL AMG 65, another was a SL AMG 63, and I can't remember the third.

I don't see SL AMG 65's every day, and I was curious about them. I can't tell the years on these particular cars so I don't know if they were brand new, which I doubt, or a couple of years old. I went to the MB web site and took a look at the prices. A new SL AMG 63 starts at $135,000 and the 65 goes for $194,700. Pretty impressive numbers and very impressive cars. Kind of rare for my neck of the woods.

If those were not impressive enough MB came out this year with the SL65 AMG Black series. What's a black series? Well according to the March 2009 issue of Road and Track, one fact is the price. Starts at $299,000!! Now I don't expect to see one of them in person, so I decided to read the article and drool a little. How about a hand-built V12, with sohc, 36 valve, 6.0 liter twin-turbo power. This produces 661bhp at 5400 rpm. Not really a green economy box.

Other impressive stats. Zero to 60 in 3.9 seconds with a top speed being electronically limited to 199 mph. Now why didn't they let it go to 201, and really be impressive? I sure don't know, but with either number I don't think there is any place around where you can stretch this beast's legs.

Honda Appoints New President

Once again the economy has struck at the top executive level in an automobile manufacturing company. The Associated Press had an article today which discusses the appointment of Takanobu Ito, to be the head of "core automaking operations" at Honda Motor Co. I'm not sure what this means, but it sounds important.

Mr. Ito replaces Takeo Fukui, 64, who will remain on the board as adviser. This sounds like one of the Japanese jobs, where you have a desk, can look out the window, but you have no real function in the company any longer. I believe once you step down, your next job is to save you and the company face.

Mr. Ito joined Honda in 1978 as an engineer, and has moved up in the company holding various positions such as as executive vice president at Honda R&D Americas Inc. This gives him important experience in the American marketplace. Honda is a world wide company with the American marketplace as one of the key elements to its success or failure.

It's hard to tell when an executive is doing a good or bad job at a particular company at a particular time, when the entire world's economy goes south. However, if Mr. Ito's company does not turn around in the near future, he may be looking out of window also.

Formula One Update

Besides all of the news about Honda withdrawing from Formula one this year, a couple of other teams are also in the news.

This year there is no formula races scheduled for the United States, or North American for that matter. But all hope is not lost for the future. It appears that there may be a US formula one team fielded in 2010. Leading the effort is Peter Windsor, who among other positions was Frank Williams team manager. He along with Ken Anderson are supposed to make an announcement about USF1 tomorrow.

They said that they have spent four years preparing for the team, and are planning on employing over 100 people and they have a working budget of $64,000,000 for the team.

Headquarters will be in North Carolina, where their cars will be designed and built. Hard to say how successful they might be in the coming years. Lots of very large companies have thrown multi millions of dollars in the formula one area with almost nothing to show for it. But the US is known for small group start ups that become major players. I wish them good luck, as I would like to see our country have a greater participation in one of the most competitive sporting events around.

$87,500 for a Hybrid?

Yes, and that's the price for the base model. The top end is $106,000! Just what am I talking about? Well, its the Fisker Karma. Fisker Automotive Inc. of Irvine, California is planning this model for 2010, and recently announced the price range.

In today's San Diego Union-Tribune is a picture of the car. Looks great, and nothing like a hybrid. Some of the specifications are: 50 mile range on battery, and around 300 on 4 cylinder engine; 260 horsepower, turbocharge 2.0 liter four cylinder engine from General Motors; Top speed, battery 95 mph; Top Speed battery and engine 125 mph.

The spec I like is o-60 mph acceleration 5.8 seconds. Faster than my 1984 Ferrari.

What I'm not sure about is the gas mileage as no mention was made in the article. Now I thought that hybrid cars were supposed to be high mileage vehicles, at low entry prices, and pretty ugly looking. This seems to be the opposite. Very high price, in the top end Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz range. Great looking, and pretty fast. What goes here?

Not sure also about bragging rights. Do I want to tell people that I spent over $100,000 for a car? Not that I have a $100,000 to spend - it's just the idea of a hybrid for economy and this price tag. However, I'm sure that a lot of people will line up for the new Fisker. Fisker's goal is 15,000 vehicles per year, with 1,300 worldwide orders in hand.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out next year in light of today's economy. I really doubt the 15,000 will happen.

Honda's Formula One Fate Getting Closer

Reuters UK reported today on some additional progress on the ultimate fate of the Honda Formula One team. British entrepreneur Richard Branson wants to take over Honda's Formula One team, the sport's commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone told Reuters on Thursday.

As you may or may not know, Mr. Branson is associated with the Branson Virgin Group. He is not new to formula one racing as his Virgin Mobile company was a sponsor of the Jordan formula one team in 2002. His other ties with formula one also include the Japanese driver Takuma Sato who has been sponsored by Virgin Atlantic Japan for the past four years. Another tie in is that Mr. Branson is a personal friend of Adrian Reynard, co-founder of the BAR team that became Honda in 2006.

One of the open questions is why Honda would be more interested in a sale to Branson rather than the executive buyout which is on the table? It will be interesting to get the news next week as the deal may go through as early as next Monday.

The new owners, who ever they may be, will be looking at a 60 million dollar per year cost. While this sounds like an astronomical number, it is much better than the 300 million Honda spent, and still only finished ninth in the standings. I won't tell you how much Ferrari spent in order to be first.

Who Will Buy Honda's Formula One Team?

Last December Honda announced that they were pulling out of Formula One racing, and would not have an entry in the 2009 schedule. This was done in response to the world wide economic conditions and therefore the company decided that they had to cut down on certain activities.

Since that time there have been all kinds of guesses as what would happen to their team. Would someone buy it in time for the first race of the season at the end of March? Lot's of names were tossed around as potential buyers. Most of them proved to be idle speculation.

Recently, the team's current chief executive Nick Fry, and four other senior Honda executives were putting a bid together for the team. It looked like these were the leaders and might take oved. However, yesterday word came out that British entrepreneur Richard Branson's Virgin Group has made a bid for the Honda Formula One team. Looks like Honda might have a choice now, but time is running out for the team to participate in the early races. Will they make it?

As the old saying goes, time will tell.

How Many Will Be Left?

A number of years ago I took a class on how to Charge More or Keep Your Prices Up (not the exact title of the class). The point was that if you wanted to make money you could not give your product or services away.

One of the examples used in the class was the question, how many car manufacturing companies had been started in the United States. The answer was over 500. The next question was who was the fourth largest car company in the United States. No one knew the answer. The point was that almost all of them had gone out of business. Very few for charging too much.

I was reminded of this discussion when I read this morning that GM was considering dropping or selling some of its brands as part of the multi million dollar bail out plan they were proposing to Congress.

According to the story, Saturn will remain for the next couple of years and then be spun off or sold. Hummer is being looked at and either will be sold or phased out. Saab is now up for sale.

The thought that I had was, who would buy these brands, and if GM was unable to make them successful, why would a new buyer believe that they could.

My Dad used to be a business broker. One of the things he said to me, was that every buyer feels that they know more than every seller. So it will be interesting to see if the buyers of Saturn, Hummer and Saab make it or become just one of the 500 plus who are no longer around.

Car and Driver Shoot Out - More Stuff.

Yesterday I reported on the results of the Vehicle scores. In the Powertrain portion the Corvette won again. It came in first in Transmission and tied for first in Fuel Economy and Engine NVH. The Lamborghini was in 1/4 mile Acceleration, and neither the Mercedes nor the Viper finished first in any of these sub categories.

In the next major category of Chassis the Corvette again won. This time it was first in Performance and Steering Feel and tied for first in Brake Feel, Handling and Ride. So the Vette won or tied in every single sub category.

The last category was Experience and it consisted of Gotta Have It and Fun to Drive. The Lamborghini won both of these, with the Corvette tying for second in Gotta Have It and winning second place for Fun to Drive.

I sure wish I was there. The results were not what I would have expected. How about what you would have bet on?

Car and Driver Shoot Out Continued

Yesterday I mentioned that the Chevrolet Corvette was the overall winner compared to the Lamborghini, the Mercedes-Benz and the Dodged Viper. Now we know that any contest can be slanted, depending upon the criteria you are using. So lets take a look at the areas that were measured, and some results.

The overall contest was divided into four broad areas; vehicle; powertrain; chasis and experience.

Today we will take a closer look at the "vehicle area" and its results. One thing which looked a little strange to start was the maximum number of points allocated to each sub area. By that I mean the "as tested price" could range from 1-20 points, while the subcategory rebates/extras was from 1-5 points. Boy I'm sure glad they were using objective measurements that everyone would agree with.

The Corvette won with 72 out of 90 points. However it placed first in only one area Ergonomics (tied) and Trunk Space won.

The Mercedes-Benz and the Viper tied each with 62 points. The Mercedes-Benz won in Features/Amenities, and Driver Comfort, and tied in Ergonomics, Fit and Finish, Interior Styling. While the Viper won in As-Tested Price, and that was it.

The Lamborghini was last at 56 points, having won in Exterior Styling and tied in Fit and Finish and Interior Styling.

I can hardly wait until tomorrow, to post more results. Gee first in trunk space, I sure what one of those.

Car and Driver 600 HP Shoot Out

The March 2009 issue of Car and Driver had one of their typical comparison articles of different brands of cars competition. This time around they selected some super cars. One critical requirement was that each car had to have over 600 HP. The final contestants were:

Dodge Viper SR 10 - 600 BPH @ 6100 RPM with a V10 512 cu in engine.

Mercedes-Benz LS65 AMG Black Series - 661 BPH @ 5400 RPM with a V12 365 cu (twin turbocharged engine

Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 - 632 BPH @ 8000 with a V12 396 cu engine

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 - 638 BPP @ 6500 RPM with a V8 376 cu engine

I'll admit I have a prestigious for Italian cars, and before I read the article, I would have placed a small bet that the Labo would be their top pick. Well I guess I have a little money. Turns out they selected the Corvette. Their final point scores were:

Corvette -204 points

Lamborghini - 186 points

Mercedes-Benz - 183

Viper - 171

I would have come up with a different total, but then again I would not have used the same criteria they did in picking the top car. More details tomorrow.

Acura TSX Gets Accord Engine?

I think a switch has been announced. If I recall correctly a lower level brand, like the Honda Accord, may get some parts or features from a higher level brand, like the Honda Acura.

I just read that the reverse seems to have happened. The Acura TSX was designed to compete directly with the BMW 3 series. However it did not have all of the major features to make it competitive. It was lacking both a V6 engine and rear wheel drive.

The 2010 Acura TSX will now have one of those features, namely a V6 engine. And where did this engine come from. Why the Honda Accord? That's the switch. According to the report it looks suspiciously like the 3.5-liter mill that powers the Honda Accord. In Acura tune, the V-6 outputs 280 horsepower (nine more horses than the Accord). No one said it is identical, but it would seem strange that in today's economy Honda would design a brand new engine, when they already have one available. My guess is that its almost identical.

The newly announced Acura however did not get rear wheel drive. For most people it is not that big a deal, however for the race minded it does make a little difference. When a car accelerates there is a weight shift in the opposite direction. So if you are going forward and punch it, the weight shift goes to the rear wheels. This is fine for a rear wheel driven car, as weight is being shifted to the driving wheels and you get more traction. In a front drive car, you lose traction from the driving wheels. No very important, unless you are stomping it. Many BMW3 drivers want to stomp it, so the new Accord will not appeal as much to them.

Worlds Fastest Car?

Last night I was watching TV and the show was called something like Mega World. The topic was Sweden and some of the unique features of the country, from portable weapons to the worlds fastest production car. This program showed the Koenigsegg CCX, a 250 mile per hour super car. They interviewed the inventor and showed details of the car, such as 806 hp motor. They also mentioned that the car had broken the speed record previous held by the McLaren F1 of 240 miles per hour.

That rang a bell and I realized that the show was at least several years old, because I remembered that the Bugatti Veyron was supposed to be the fastest production car. So this morning I Googled and found out I was wrong again. Turns out the Veyron has lost its title and the new top dog is the SSC Ultimate Aero at 257 miles per hour. You can see the complete list here:
http://www.thesupercars.org/fastest-cars/fastest-cars-in-the-world-top-10-list/

While I guess the economy is hurting most folks, there are still some around who can $500,000 plus to own one of the worlds fastest exotics. While I love looking at and driving sports cars, I have to admit I have no need for a car that can go over 200 mph. Do you?

More Bad News About Honda

It turns out this terrible economy is impacting more and more people. Honda Motor Co in Tokyo just announced that they will hire 40% less college graduates next fiscal year. They are planning to hire 890 graduates for the fiscal year starting in April 2010 compared with the 1,490 graduates the company has committed to hiring for the upcoming fiscal year.

Honda has said it will reduce its domestic temporary work force of 4,300 to zero by the end of April, which I reported on earlier.

The news continues with an early retirement package is being offered to their British workers. No mention of how many of the total 4,500 employed there will receive this offer.

Honda is not alone in cutting back. Nissan the 3rd largest car manufacture in Japan, said Monday it will cut 20,000 jobs worldwide, or 8.5 percent of its 235,000-strong global work force, by March 2010.

The news just keeps on getting bleaker and bleaker. Let's hope that the US stimulus package just announced as being passed, will help the global economy. It's time for some better news.

Honda Insight New Dash

One of the most interesting features of the new Honda Insight is the dash. It is called an Eco Assist dashboard. This dashboard tracks what you are doing with the accelerator pedal and then displays the information on a color changing speedometer. It also shows an "economy scoring function".

All of these are turned on by a large green ECON button on the dashboard. Want to make some changes in how the car operates? Just press this button and the CVT transmissions shifts modes and on board computers adjust the A/C, then stops the engine from idling sooner and it also increases regenerative braking capabilities.

One item which I have to investigate is the real MPG. One report on Honda's web site says 41 MPG, which I reported on yesterday. Today in looking around the web I found an article that suggested 61+ MPG. So I don't know yet the true mileage.

I'm also trying to post a copy of the new dashboard on this blog. Here is the link.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/eco_assist_system_1_opt.jpg

Can anyone tell me how to post the actual picture rather than the link? I can copy it, but when I go back to this posting, the paste button is grayed out, and Control V does not work.

Honda Insight

If you are a car fan then I'm sure you are aware that Honda has announced their newest hybrid called the 2010 Insight. Several years ago Honda dropped the Insight name and car saying that it was better to design and offer smaller cars with hybrid technology, such as the Civic hybrid. I guess they changed their mind.

Of course this Insight is targeted specifically against the Toyota Prius. Honda has a ways to go if they want to catch or pass the Toyota hybrid. The Prius is rated the most fuel efficient car in the United States, and the 2010 model is rated at 50 mpg.The Insight is currently rated at 40 city, 43 highway and 41 combined. So they can't claim to be more fuel efficient. I have not seen the final dollar amount for the car, but it is supposed to be around $20,000, which would be less than the Prius.

The list of specifications is impressive, and if you would like to see them go here:
http://automobiles.honda.com/insight-hybrid/specifications.aspx

Of course a couple of keys to its success is the price of gasoline. There seems to be a direct ratio between the pump price and the popularity of a hybrid. They go up and down together. The second key is the global economy. If you can't afford a new car, it really doesn't make a lot of difference what the price is of a new model.

I have friends who love their Prius, and it seems like a less expensive model like the Insight should be a good addition for Honda. However, a friend of mine's wife has been looking for a used Insight for the past 6 months. She did not want a Prius, but found the old Insights were just too expensive. Last week I heard that she has decided to buy a Prius, after looking at the information about the Insight. I'm going to have to find out why.

Will There be a Honda Team in Formula One?

As you may know, in December Honda announced that they were leaving Formula One racing and would not participate in the 2009 season. Since then there have been a variety of rumors about who, if anyone would purchase the team. One of the most interesting ones were about the second richest man in the world, Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim Hel. The story I read said that Honda was willing to sell their team to him for $1.00. That's a price that even I could afford. Of course, once I had the team I could not afford to even buy them one tire - but that's another story.

Yesterday International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Max Mosley rated the team's chances of being in Melbourne at no more than 70 percent. Now the first race is to be held on March 29, which does not give anyone very much time to pull a team together and race competitively.

The current rumor: The Honda team's hopes of Formula One survival appear to depend on a management buyout led by Ross Brawn and supported by chief executive Nick Fry. It would be interesting if they can afford to run the team. Last year the estimate was over 300 million dollars for the average team. This year changes to the specifications and cars may reduce this by 30%, but that was still too much for Honda.

Along with Honda leaving the sport is the fact that there is no longer a North American race site, nor is there a North American team. Seems a shame we can't do one or the other.

Honda Accord Passes Twenty Million

It was just announced that Honda Accord has just passed 20 million cars that have been produced in North America. While the economy has been down, and car sales are getting grim, this is an important milestone.

Honda began producing cars in North American in 1982 in Marysville, Ohio. More than 77 percent of all Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2008 were produced in North America – a total of 1,421,427 units.

Further, 11 different models are produced exclusively in North America – the Honda Accord Coupe, Civic Coupe and Si, Civic GX natural gas vehicle, Odyssey, Pilot, Element and Ridgeline as well as the Acura TL, MDX, RDX and CSX (Canadian exclusive model).

This should put to rest the idea that American workers cannot produce a world class quality vehicle. Of course this does not me that our big 3 (?) General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler can do the same thing.

It is an interesting fact that about 5,000 different companies have tried to manufacture cars in the United States, and now we are down to three. With Fiat taking 35% of Chrysler, sooner or later we may be down to the big two!

Now the question is can the American car manufacturing companies learn something from the new Honda record? It's not the workers, or the physical plants that make the difference. What do you think makes it?

Fuel Injection - Why More Modern Systems

In an earlier blog I listed a variety of reasons fuel injection systems were developed. Much of the following information is from Wikipedia.

The major one is elimination of harmful emissions. The ultimate combustion goal is to match each molecule of fuel with a corresponding number of molecules of oxygen so that neither has any molecules remaining after combustion in the engine and catalytic converter. If this is achieved you have reached California's goal for cars.

Typically you have an Engine Control Unit (ECU) which monitors the air and fuel mixtures via one or more sensors. One of the most critical sensors is in the exhaust gas. The actual injector is simple in theory. It's just a valve that opens and allows fuel to flow into the engine. Where the valve is place, how long it is open, when it opens etc. are some of the critical factors that must be calculated.

There have been various different types of Injection systems. One of the earliest was the Bosch K-Jetronic which was a Continuous Injection System. This was introduced in 1974, and it is the system used on my 1984 Ferrari 308. Gasoline is pumped from the fuel tank to a large control valve called a fuel distributor, which separates the single fuel supply pipe from the tank into smaller pipes, one for each injector. The injectors are simple spring-loaded check valves with nozzles; once fuel system pressure becomes high enough to overcome the counterspring, the injectors begin spraying. K-Jetronic was used for many years between 1974 and the mid 1990s.

Another approach was when General Motors implemented a system called "central port injection" (CPI) or "central port fuel injection" (CPFI). It uses tubes with poppet valves from a central injector to spray fuel at each intake port rather than the central throttle-body.

If you have a newer car then you probably are using a Multi-point system. Multi-point fuel injection injects fuel into the intake port just upstream of the cylinder's intake valve, rather than at a central point within an intake manifold, referred to as SPFI, or single point fuel injection. MPFI (or just MPI) systems can be sequential, in which injection is timed to coincide with each cylinder's intake stroke, batched, in which fuel is injected to the cylinders in groups, without precise synchronization to any particular cylinder's intake stroke, or Simultaneous, in which fuel is injected at the same time to all the cylinders.

All modern EFI systems utilize sequential MPFI.

In my first blog I mentioned that fuel injection systems in automobiles were used in racing cars. This technology then moved to street vehicles. This progression is continuing. Race cars (for example Formula One) began using a system called Direct Injection. Many diesel engines use this approach also. The injection nozzle is placed inside the combustion chamber and the piston incorporates a depression (often toroidal) where initial combustion takes place. Direct injection diesel engines are generally more efficient and cleaner than indirect injection engines.

This is the next step for gasoline powered cars. You will begin to see it implemented on higher end exotics like Ferrari and Lamborghini and as the volume increases the technology will move to more and more stock cars. It gives the car more power at the correct time, and the efficiency is becoming more important as fuel prices rise and we move to greener vehicles.

Fuel Injection - Early Electronic Systems

The mechanical fuel injection systems had some serious problems when used in passenger type automobiles and development turned to various types of electronic fuel control. Early systems were produced as early as 1957 for an AMC Rambler Rebel. Chrysler used the same system in 1958 on some of their cars. However as in many new technologies, there were some major problems.

Bosch picked up the patents for this early system and went on to develop several different EFI systems. Their first system was called D-Jetronic, and used on several brands such as VW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Citroën, Saab, and Volvo. The D system was followed by the J and L systems. These devices are considered a speed/density system, using engine speed and intake manifold air density to calculate "air mass" flow rate and thus fuel requirements. The correct air fuel mixture is critical for optimal engine performance and longevity.

An advanced system was introduced in 1982 which used a platinum wire located in the incoming air flow. The wire was heated and then became cooler based on the air flow or air mass being drawn into the engine. This was a better and simpler system than the earlier ones, and became a standard. A significant difference on this Bosch system was that it used a digital microprocessor for control, rather than the earlier analog systems.

Tomorrow we will look at the basic designs that have been used by EFI systems and what is destined to be the next major system.
