Cold Air Intake/Short Ram Intake Continued

Yesterday I discussed the major reason for purchasing these devices - more power. There are two other reasons that you might want one. More sound. The factory air box is restrictive because they want to produce quiet cars. With less restrictions you get an increase in the sound level and pitch. Lots of folks like this. Another reason is the cold air intake or short ram intakes come in different colors, from polished to red and blue etc. They will dress up the engine compartment.

On the other hand, everything is not an advantage. If you are using a cold air intake there is some possibility that you could draw in water along with the additional air when you go through a large puddle. This can cause hydro-lock and harm your engine. Typical rain fall is not a problem. There are two common solutions to this potential problem. One is a cover for the air filter which allows air flow but stops water from entering. The other is a dual valve system, where if the main air path becomes blocked, a bypass is used to continue air into the engine.

The better brands will offer this type of protection, while the cheap stuff does not.

Cold Air Intake/ Short Ram Intake

Let's continue the discussion about getting cold or cooler air in your engine so that it can produce more power.

Two ways that are popular today are the Cold Air Intake and the Short Ram Intake. Both of these devices replace the stock air box and air filter on your car. The Short Ram Intake has its opening to air flow within the engine compartment. That means it draws in much warmer air than the atmosphere. Some systems have a heat shield to keep the hottest engine air away from the inlet and try and draw from the coolest point in the engine compartment. This device should have an air filter which is less restrictive than the stock one. The next effect is less restrictions in the air flow and a little denser (i.e. cooler air) so that some additional power is generated. It also looks impressive and it will change the sound of your engine.

The Cold Air Intake offers all of the above advantages and in addition draws in more cool or colder air. It accomplishes this by having longer tubes which extend from the engine compartment usually to the wheel well or behind the front bumper. In both cases the incoming air is cooler than the air inside the engine compartment.

I don't have horsepower gains on the Short Ram Intake, but K & N filters report that their Cold Air Intake system will increase horsepower for Honda Accords from about 4 to 13 horsepower, depending upon the year and engine of the Accord.

More Air = More Power

Yesterday I started blogging about the correct air / fuel mixture. Now let's continue with more air. Air contains oxygen, and the oxygen is what allows the fuel to ignite and burn. The more air you can get in your engine during it's intake cycle, the more power potential you have.

Anything that increases the air flow or increases the amount of oxygen in the air leads to this increase, anything that restricts or slows down the air flow reduces the power output. So what does each?

If the air's temperature rises it can hold less oxygen and if you can cool the air it will carry more oxygen. If their are any restrictions in the incoming air flow path less air is drawn into the engine. So to solve both of these problems devices called cold air intakes and short ram intakes are designed to pull in cooler, more dense air (more oxygen) and to eliminate as many restrictions as possible.

Another way to increase the air/oxygen flow is to compress the incoming air. Devices such as superchargers and turbocharges are designed to compress the air and deliver more oxygen to the engine. The key difference between these two devices is that the supercharger is directly driven by the engine (belts or gears) and the turbocharger is driven off of the waste exhaust gases produced by the engine.

So far everything mentioned can be done to a fairly stock car for street use. When you want to race a car, other steps involving smoothing the internal engine paths, special tuning, and changing such things as the compression ratio, cam timing, reducing engine part weights and other more complicated techniques, can be done.

I will not be getting into these advanced methods in this blog for a while.

More Power - The Air / Fuel Mixture

Today I'm going to start blogging about how to get more power from your car.

One of the basic ideas to understand when you are evaluating different options to help you get more power is the concept of air / fuel mixture. Fuel burns inside your engine which produces power. However the fuel must have air (really the oxygen in the air) in the proper proportions to be efficient. For gasoline fuel, the stoichiometric air/fuel mixture is approximately 14.7 times the mass of air to fuel. Any mixture less than 14.7 to 1 is considered to be a rich mixture, any more than 14.7 to 1 is a lean mixture.

So if you add more fuel and the air is not increased in the proper ratio to wind up with a "rich" or a "lean" mixture.

A rich mixture produces cooler combustion gases than the ideal ratio, and this lower heat level mean that you are wasting fuel and lowering your fuel efficiency.

A lean mixture produces more heat, but produce less power than the correct ratio.

All of this is under a light engine load. As your engine speed increases you must have more fuel added to prevent detonation (knocking) and overheating of the cylinder head.

Devices in your car, such as the oxygen sensor in the exhaust stream, are designed to monitor and control this mixture of air and fuel. Keep in mind that just adding more air or more fuel without a balance will not produce the power you are looking for, and can create damage.

Stock, Appearance or Power?

Humans like to put things in different categories, so I will be no different, as I talk a little bit about different kinds of car owners.

So I maintain that owners usually fall into several different groups. One type of owner uses a car to get from point A to point B. They buy a car that might offer them great gas millage, comfort, carry a maximum number of passengers or things, etc. The key here is that the brand of car is secondary. If another brand does something better when they are ready to purchase, they will switch brands. A car is a means to an end, and not purchased for pleasure.

A second type of owner is interested in power and performance. It's funny that no matter how powerful the original car is, they want more. I have a friend that modified a Ferrari with twin turbos and internal modifications so that it will dyno out at over 800 horsepower. Guess what - he "needs" more power. Not sure what the next modification will be.

Another type wants the car to look great but it must also be unique and not look like another owner's car. You see these at car shows. Sometimes they are exotics and sometimes low riders. Either way the key is no one looks like you.

In the next couple of blogs I will be discussing how to add both power and unique looks to your pride and joy.

What is a CUV? - And Why Should I Care?

Some designations about cars are really starting to confuse me. I know what a sedan, coupe, and station wagon are, but I'm getting a headache trying to keep up with the CUV designations.

According to Wikipedia:

A Crossover — variously called CUV, for crossover utility vehicle — is a marketing term for a vehicle that derives from a car platform while borrowing features from an SUV or Minivan.

The crossover combines, in highly variable degrees, the design features such as tall interior packaging, high H-point seating, high ground-clearance, or all-wheel-drive capability of the SUV — with design features from an automobile platform such as car-like handling, ride, or economy. A crossover also uses a car's unibody or monocoque construction while forgoing the body on frame construction in use on most SUVs.

Ok, now that we know, do you agree that the following are CUVs?

The reason I'm asking is that there is another one on the near horizon. Honda has taken out the name "Crosstour". Spy pictures are starting to show up, and all kinds of guesses are being made.

The photos of the new Accord-based CUV, posted on the Temple Of VTEC, show what looks to be a Honda Accord Tourer, the European version of the Acura TSX, with the front end of the U.S.-spec Accord grafted on and some kind of extension in the rear.

So next year we might have a new Honda Accord.

Cars I've Never Owned - But Wish I Had - No. 1

The first car I've never owned but wish I had would be a Jaguar XK 120 Roadster or as it would more properly be called a XK 120 OTS (Open two seater). Sometime in the very early 1950's a good friend of my Father purchased a new one. I'm not sure of the exact model year but it was either a 1952 or a 1953. As soon as it was broken in they took it from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and back.

It was a beautiful car. The 120 designation was representative of the top speed of the car which was just over 120 miles per hour. I really don't know anyone who has driven one that fast, as the car's front end got very light at that speed, and the handling become a little dangerous.

The basic specs on the car were 3442 cc engine in one of three tunes: 160 bph, 180 bph or 210 bph. All were dual overhead cam, straight six engines with two SU carbs.

Until two years ago I was a judge at the local San Diego Jaguar club concurs, and there was always a good turn out of XK 120's, its replacement 140's and the final version the XK 150. fantastic looks, good performance, a little crude handling based on today's standards but great for that time period.

Some of the cars are "trailer queens" and are driven only on and off trailers at car shows. Other owners drive their cars. A friend of mine drove his XK120 with his wife and spare parts from San Diego to Colorado Springs for a car show. Washed and cleaned up his car and won 2nd place the next day. Now that's what I call an outstanding car and a driver.

Is Honda Getting out of Racing?

Recently I mentioned an article that said Honda was pulling out of formula one racing. That was true, and they are now out of the sport.

Today it was reported that due to the continued economic slump Honda is now considering getting out of almost all motorcycle racing also. They said they have not yet made a firm decision -- but I think the handwriting is on the wall. The goal is to reduce expenses in light of their losses for the year.

The discussion seems to be which if any of their involvement in motorcycle racing will remain. Reports indicate that they will stay in MotoGP. Motocross, motorcycle trials and other forms of off-road racing will be the main victims of Honda's latest cost-cutting measures.

It is of course understandable, but still a shame. Without major manufacturers participation with factory team, or supplying parts, or even being a sponsor, the sports of automobile and motorcycle racing will take a hit. Many teams will no longer be able to compete, and the level of competition might drop on those who remain.

The news also reports the withdrawal of rival car makers Subaru and Suzuki from the world rally championship.

Japanese motorcycle maker Kawasaki also followed suit earlier this month by pulling out of MotoGP.

It will be interesting to see how the two sports do this year.

Toyota MR2 Supercharged

As I have mentioned several times on this blog, I really like sports cars, and over the years I have purchased several different models. One of the most fun cars I have ever had was a Toyota MR2 with a supercharger. I purchased a used 1986 model. It had a great reputation, as shown in Wikipedia:

"The MR2 was Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year for 1985. In 2004, Sports Car International named the MR2 number eight on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s. The MR2 was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1986 and 1987. This vehicle was often referred to as a "Pocket Rocket"."

It was mid-engine based, and had one of the best manual transmissions I have ever used. Really slick. My current Ferrari's shift feels clumsy compared to the MR2's.

Unlike many other cars I have had this one was very reliable. The most serious problem I had was one day it would not start and I had to have it towed in. Turned out something (rat, mouse, squirrel ?) got in the engine compartment and ate some ignition wires. They were eaten so close to some parts there was no way to patch them, so I had the car sit around a while until we got new ones from Japan.

While I like sports cars, I'm a pretty conservative driver. This was the only car I have ever received a speeding ticket in. My wife and I were on our way to a meeting in Las Vegas. I was passed by another sports car on the way, so I decided to catch up with him. Stupid decision. I caught up with him and the Nevada highway patrol caught up with both of us.

After a few years it was time to move on to another car, and the MR2 was replaced by the Maserati.

1980 Maserati Merak SS

About 10 years ago I purchased a 1980 Maserati Merak SS. I had been told years ago "Never fall in love with the sheet metal". Sure enough I ignored this old advise and purchased a car because I thought it looked so neat.

The classic car dealer I purchased this car from told me that the car was one of many cars that had been seized in an IRS raid for back taxes from someone in Texas. It seemed this car was purchased in 1980, driven for a while and then parked or stored for a number of years. The car had only 8,000 miles on it when I purchased it. The dealer had done some work because of the long time the car had sat around. I test drove it and noticed a couple of things, one of which was the clutch not feeling very well when I shifted the five speed box.

I got a discount and directed to a shop who did a clutch job on the car (at the dealer's price). Over the couple of years I had the car, several other things went wrong with the car. The ignition system went out, and world wide no parts were available. My mechanic left the original parts on the car, but he hid a new MSD ignition in the engine compartment. So the car ran fine, but still looked original. To get a little more power out of the V6, I had the jets on the carbs replaced. Helped a little.

I can't really remember all of the parts I had replaced, but it was a long list. When a car has not been driven for a number of years, certain parts dry out, or freeze in place and have to be replaced. They all did not fail at the same time, so it seemed that every other month I was back in the shop. Some parts were available, but you had to wait a long time (like a month or so).

All in all I liked the design of the car, enjoyed joining the Maserati Owners Club and attending meetings around Southern California, and having one of 652 total SS models produced. On the other hand I was tired of getting towed home (over half a dozen times) and it looked like my AAA card was about to be canceled from excessive use.

After a long talk with my mechanic, who worked only on Maserati, Ferrari and Lamborghini cars, in which he advised me to sell the car and buy something reliable like a Ferrari, I did.

Sorry to see the Merak go on one hand. On the other hand it was like a boat. "A hole in the water, you keep pouring money into."

Accord is "Top" Down Under

Ok, the title looks strange. What I was getting at was that the Australia's longest running motoring magazine Wheels has just completed their Car of the Year Award for cars released in 2008.

The final shortlist of cars included the Honda Accord Euro, BMW X6, Chrysler Grand Voyager, Jeep Cherokee, Lexus LX570, Volvo XC70, Audi A4, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Mazda 6.

And the big winner was the Honda Accord Euro. Pretty impressive winning against BMW and Lexus.

Now all I have to do is to figure out what is the difference between the Euro model and the U.S. models.

As you may know I'm in the business of selling Honda Accord parts. That is as soon as my web sites are finished. For the first time I might be in the right business. This is a blurb from Car Max who as you might know sells all kinds of used cars:

The Honda Accord retains the top spot for the third consecutive year of most searched for car, according to information released from CarMax, Inc., a retailer of used cars, which adds the site averaged more than five million visits per month.

The top 10 searched vehicles on carmax.com for 2008 are:

1. Honda Accord
2. Honda Civic
3. Toyota Camry
4. Ford Mustang
5. Nissan Altima
6. Chevrolet Tahoe
7. Ford F-150
8. Toyota Corolla
9. Toyota Tacoma
10. Nissan Maxima

“This list shows the interesting variety of makes and models our customers are researching when shopping online for a quality used car. Every car in our inventory can be found on carmax.com and it will show the same no-haggle price you’ll see at your local CarMax store,” says Ann Yauger, director of carmax.com.

The CarMax Web site can be used to research information on vehicles of various makes and models. The site also showcases vehicles with multiple photos, the no-haggle price, and information on features, options, fuel economy and customer reviews.
