4 Cylinders or 5 Cylinders or 6 Cylinders?

This is what you can get with the 2009 Honda Accord. The top of the line model has a 3.5 liter V6 with variable valve timing and variable displacement. Depending on driving conditions and how deeply you’re prodding the accelerator, the V6 will use as few as 4 cylinders – shutting off 2 – in its bid to increase fuel economy without compromising the virtues of big displacement. This is an answer for those who want a small engine and it's fuel economy, yet at the same time are looking for a way to get an instant increase in power when its needed.

At around 25 miles per hour, in steady traffic the Accord shifts to using only 4 cylinders. Step on the gas a little and you now have 5 cylinders working for you. Push it and all 6 come on line. Road tests report that the system works very well, however you may feel a slight vibration in the drive train as the engine switches modes.

Other features are the i-VTEC system and a 5 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Everything on this model is an improvement, except that the Accord has once again become the largest Accord ever made.

I'm reminded a little of the old Ford Thunderbird. An interesting 2 seat "sport car" when it came out. But soon each new model grew bigger and bigger. And the people who wanted to buy one become smaller and smaller until the model was dropped. I don't think this will happen to the best "small" sedan in the world - but it could.
