Cold Air Intake/ Short Ram Intake

Let's continue the discussion about getting cold or cooler air in your engine so that it can produce more power.

Two ways that are popular today are the Cold Air Intake and the Short Ram Intake. Both of these devices replace the stock air box and air filter on your car. The Short Ram Intake has its opening to air flow within the engine compartment. That means it draws in much warmer air than the atmosphere. Some systems have a heat shield to keep the hottest engine air away from the inlet and try and draw from the coolest point in the engine compartment. This device should have an air filter which is less restrictive than the stock one. The next effect is less restrictions in the air flow and a little denser (i.e. cooler air) so that some additional power is generated. It also looks impressive and it will change the sound of your engine.

The Cold Air Intake offers all of the above advantages and in addition draws in more cool or colder air. It accomplishes this by having longer tubes which extend from the engine compartment usually to the wheel well or behind the front bumper. In both cases the incoming air is cooler than the air inside the engine compartment.

I don't have horsepower gains on the Short Ram Intake, but K & N filters report that their Cold Air Intake system will increase horsepower for Honda Accords from about 4 to 13 horsepower, depending upon the year and engine of the Accord.
