This morning Honda Motor Company of Japan announced another round of layoffs. This is in response to the world's decreased demand for new cars. The company said that it will cut 3,200 jobs, by April 2009. This will reduce to zero the number of temporary workers that are employed by Honda. This round comes as a followup to a previous announcement of a reduction of 1,200 jobs.
This leaves Honda as the 2nd largest automaker in Japan with an estimated world wide employment of 185,000. In addition production has been slashed by an additional 56,000 vehicles. Plans are now to build a total of 1.168 million vehicles.
It looks like none of the automakers world wide are able to maintain their original production plans in light of the world-wide economic slump. However, the Japanese companies seem to be effected less than their American counterparts.
