It was just announced that Honda Accord has just passed 20 million cars that have been produced in North America. While the economy has been down, and car sales are getting grim, this is an important milestone.
Honda began producing cars in North American in 1982 in Marysville, Ohio. More than 77 percent of all Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2008 were produced in North America – a total of 1,421,427 units.
Further, 11 different models are produced exclusively in North America – the Honda Accord Coupe, Civic Coupe and Si, Civic GX natural gas vehicle, Odyssey, Pilot, Element and Ridgeline as well as the Acura TL, MDX, RDX and CSX (Canadian exclusive model).
This should put to rest the idea that American workers cannot produce a world class quality vehicle. Of course this does not me that our big 3 (?) General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler can do the same thing.
It is an interesting fact that about 5,000 different companies have tried to manufacture cars in the United States, and now we are down to three. With Fiat taking 35% of Chrysler, sooner or later we may be down to the big two!
Now the question is can the American car manufacturing companies learn something from the new Honda record? It's not the workers, or the physical plants that make the difference. What do you think makes it?
