Fuel Injection Systems

For the next few blog posts I'm going to discuss some history and concepts behind fuel injection systems. From a historical perspective fuel injection systems range the the very first systems called "mechanical" fuel injection, to the very latest which is called "direct" fuel injection.

There are a variety of reasons, some of them conflicting, why over the past 30 years or so different fuel injection systems have replaced carburetor based systems. I for one am glad, because I can remember trying to balance a couple of carburetors on a Triumph TR2 engine with a vacuum gauge. I don't think I ever got them right.

The functional objectives for fuel injection systems can vary. All share the central task of supplying fuel to the combustion process, but it is a design decision how a particular system will be optimized. There are several competing objectives such as:

* power output
* fuel efficiency
* emissions performance
* ability to accommodate alternative fuels
* reliability
* driveability and smooth operation
* initial cost
* maintenance cost
* diagnostic capability
* range of environmental operation
